It has taken awhile, but I may have mastered my ABC's.
For the month of November, I have determined to begin every day going through my ABC’s. Before I crawl out of bed (generally only morning people lie awake long enough to do this), I identify something I am thankful for, which correlates to each letter of the alphabet. This morning I expressed gratitude for simple things I often take for granted, like Air conditioning (though I didn’t need it today), a Bed to sleep in, and a Car so I would not have to walk or ride a bike to the office. I know this may seem hokey or even juvenile, but for me it is crucial to protect me from going down a superslide of selfish pursuits.
According to Romans 1:21, the launching pad to losing God’s protection—and a subsequent slide into uncontrollable lust, dishonorable passions, and a debased mind—is an unthankful heart. I tend to forget that the moment I am no longer thankful, I open myself up to some of the most disgusting selfish ambitions imaginable with destructive consequences.
Sue and I have a dear friend who is trying to grasp Spanish, so she is learning the language by reading through a Spanish Bible. It is requiring extra time and effort, but she is determined to complete it within one year. When inquiring as to her motive, she related the obvious . . . to better communicate with the Hispanics she interacts with on mission trips. But in the process, she is finding herself understanding the scriptures better and getting to know Jesus better.
In a similar fashion, this month I am wanting to learn the language of Thankfulness. So I am going back to basics. It takes extra time and effort. I notice I am discovering how to better communicate with those who are seemingly of another descent because they are always content and seemingly satisfied with life. Those who live with an attitude of gratitude in their heart. AND, in the process, I am getting to know Jesus better, “who for the JOY that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame.”
I guess I am learning how to give thanks in EVERYTHING! Back to basics. Back to the ABC’s of the Christian walk. Always Being Content.
